Chimney Removal

A chimney you no longer use still has to be maintained, and it can still leak. We take it down and close up the wall and roof behind it, so the house looks finished.

Available in New York & all of New Jersey

A chimney that’s no longer used still takes rain, snow and ice. It still needs flashing, mortar and a sound crown, and when those fail it leaks like any other chimney. Sometimes taking it down makes more sense than paying to keep it up.

The photos below are from one of our removal jobs: an exterior brick chimney on the gable wall of a house. We took the brick down, framed across the opening, sheathed it with new plywood and finished the wall in new siding.

Before any work starts we confirm nothing still vents through the chimney, and we walk you through the whole job.

Available across all of New Jersey and our New York counties.

Chimney Removal

When removal makes sense

  • Nothing uses it anymore

The fireplace is closed off and no furnace or water heater vents through it, but the brick still needs upkeep.

  • It keeps letting water in

Leaks at the flashing or through the masonry that come back after every repair.

  • The masonry is falling apart

Loose brick, failing mortar or a crumbling top, and you'd rather remove it than rebuild it.

  • You're remodeling

You want the wall, room or roof space the chimney takes up.

How we work

How we remove a chimney

  1. 01

    Look it over first

We check the chimney, what it's attached to and whether anything still vents through it, and explain what removal involves.

  2. 02

    Take it down

The brick comes down and the debris is cleared from the site.

  3. 03

    Frame and sheathe

We frame across the opening and cover it with new plywood sheathing.

  4. 04

    Finish to match

The wall is closed in with siding and the roof is patched where the chimney came through.

Questions

Chimney Removal
questions, answered.

Can I remove a chimney I still use?

Not until whatever uses it has another way to vent. If a furnace, boiler or water heater still vents through the chimney, that has to be sorted out first. We'll check this when we look at the chimney.

What happens to the wall and roof afterwards?

We close them up. On the job shown on this page, the opening was framed, sheathed with new plywood and finished with new siding.
