Chimney Inspection

We take a close look at the parts of your chimney you can't easily see (the crown, cap, brick and mortar, and the flashing at the roof), then explain in plain terms what's in good shape and what needs attention.

Available in New York & all of New Jersey

Most chimney damage starts small and out of sight: a hairline crack in the crown, a few eroded mortar joints, flashing that has started to pull away from the brick. Water gets in, freezes, and the damage grows each winter.

A chimney inspection catches those problems while they’re still repairs. We look closely at the parts that keep water out of the masonry and your home:

  • The crown, the concrete or mortar top that sheds water off the chimney
  • The cap, which keeps rain, debris and animals out of the flue
  • Brick and mortar joints, checking for erosion, cracks and spalling
  • Flashing, where the chimney meets the roof

Then we tell you plainly what we found, what needs attention now, and what can wait.

An inspection is not a safety certification. It describes the condition of the parts we examined on the day. It doesn’t guarantee that a chimney, flue or fireplace is safe to use.

Chimney inspection is available across all of New Jersey and in our New York counties, including NYC, Long Island and the Hudson Valley.

Chimney Inspection

Good reasons to have your chimney inspected

  • Water or stains near the chimney

Damp walls, stained ceilings or water in the firebox often trace back to the crown, cap or flashing.

  • Crumbling mortar or spalling brick

Gaps in the joints or brick faces flaking off let water into the masonry.

  • Buying or selling a home

A look at the exterior masonry helps you understand the chimney's condition before closing.

  • After a storm or a hard winter

Wind, ice and freeze-thaw cycles are tough on crowns, caps and flashing.

How we work

What our inspection covers

  1. 01

    Crown and cap

We check the crown on top of the chimney for cracks and gaps, and whether a cap is present, secure and the right size.

  2. 02

    Brick and mortar

We look for missing or cracked mortar joints, damaged or flaking brick, leaning and other signs of water damage.

  3. 03

    Flashing at the roof

We check the step and counter flashing where the chimney meets the roof, a very common source of leaks.

  4. 04

    What we found

We explain what we saw, what needs repair now and what can wait, and give you a free estimate for any repairs.

Questions

Chimney Inspection
questions, answered.

Does a chimney inspection guarantee my chimney is safe to use?

No. Our inspection describes the condition of the parts of the chimney we examined on that day, focused on the exterior structure: crown, cap, masonry and flashing. It isn't a certification that a chimney, flue or fireplace is safe to use. If you need a flue or venting evaluation, ask us when you book and we'll tell you whether it's something we cover.

Do you inspect chimneys in New Jersey?

Yes. Chimney inspection and repair is available throughout New Jersey and in our New York counties.

How long does an inspection take?

It depends on the chimney's height, access and roof pitch. We'll give you an idea when you book.

What happens if you find a problem?

We explain what we found and give you a free estimate for the repair. There's no obligation to have us do the work.
